Turning Packaging into Education – Colgate/Palmolive

Brushing our teeth is basic hygiene for us and something we get drilled into our daily routine from a very young age. We are fortunate enough to have access to a wide variety of dental care; electric toothbrushes, dental floss, mouth wash, different flavoured toothpastes - the list is endless!

But in Myanmar (Burma), people are less fortunate and unaware of the importance of oral care. Colgate recognised this, and having opened up its trade borders to the rest of the world, they decided to give something back and educate those in the poorest region. Colgate realised they could print educational posters on the inside of large cardboard boxes used to house their own toothpaste cartons. These boxes would effectively be used as posters in children’s schools enabling them to brush up on their oral hygiene.

What a fantastically fresh and innovative idea! Additional praise for the design which used traditional Burmese illustration styles, including native folk art. Vibrant colours and characters combined were used to present bright and inspirational stories, ideal for its young target audience. The posters included even more depth by adding a free-phone number which enables teachers to access interactive educational information.

All in all, these brilliant boxes reduce waste and increase educational opportunities in Myanmar. Excellent work!
