Travel Better London

Travel Better London

There is no doubt about it; the best way to start your day is with a walk or cycle to work.  This isn’t possible for a lot of people, so instead we are forced to squeeze onto the underground – packed like sardines in a tin. Lovely. So before you’ve even got to work, you need another shower and you have almost sworn - twice.

I have only lived in London since February so the whole underground experience is still very new for me. The only way I can cope with the daily commute is by completely switching off.  Pretending I’m somewhere else – so it’s a boiling hot summers day and you are turning into liquid gold on the Victoria Line – you can feel sweat on your upper lip – close your eyes and imagine you are on a beach in Bali, sounds mad but it does help. If you think about being hot, then you are going to get angry! That’s when the shouting happens… and nobody wants that at 8am in the morning.

I heard there was a guy who wrote a novel on his commute to work, that’s pretty impressive. Other distractions of mine include people watching, outfit observing and wondering what kind of homes people live in and what sort of thing they will have for dinner that night. Ok, so now you think I’m weird?!

I know these aren’t new, but I have to say I do really like TFL’s ‘Travel Better London’ campaign crafted by M&C Saatchi.  They are very relatable and are designed to help cut down on service delays – what’s not to like?! TFL want to ensure every journey is as pleasant as possible and as a result these posters encourage passengers to be more aware and considerate. I’m sure you will agree, the TFL posters paired with punchy poetry are light hearted and have definitely put a smile on my face, in what can be a frantic journey to work.

Poet Amy Acre said:  "I think people when they're on the tube are so in that zone of huddling in and just getting through it and getting to work. It's nice to give people something a bit different and maybe inspire them and make them think in a different way, even if it's just for a minute…”
