Northern Soul, The Film!

Northern Soul is an independent film about a youth culture that changed a generation and influenced songwriters, producers, DJs and designers for decades to come. Set in 1974, is an authentic and uplifting tale of two friends whose horizons are opened up by the discovery of black American soul music.

Elaine Constantine, fashion photographer turned filmmaker, has been into northern soul since she was 14. She hasn’t yet turned 50 so having produced her own movie is a great achievement albeit 17 years in the making. You have to admire Elaine for her hard work, resilience and determination of completing the film; she even remortgaged her house and cashed in her pension to finance the project.

Elaine refused to give up her love for the northern soul era, perhaps this was because the memories were held extremely close to her heart having been born and raised in Lancashire and marrying a DJ in that music scene.

Truly capturing a by-gone time of teenage kids travelling around the country to see their favourite DJ’s, throwing shapes for hours on the dance floor and raiding record stores for the rarest imports, the release of Northern Soul has been highly anticipated.

After re-mortgaging her home, Elaine set up monthly club nights in Bolton to teach her actors how to dance in the film. She would video the dances and upload them to the film’s Facebook page. Interest soon escalated to 50,000 likes!

Elaine has described herself as one of the ‘lucky ones’ having been able to recreate a story around the soundtrack of her youth and noted it as one of the most thrilling experiences in her life. The soundtrack falls nothing short of outstanding and it’s exceptionally inspirational to successfully remake such an exciting movement in music history.

Elaine recalls her first experience of northern soul;

“It was a youth club experience. I went to one called the Town Youth Club, which was at the Town Hall and the secondary schools would descend on this ballroom and it was just rammed. They played charts most of the time. And on this one occasion, I went there and the floor cleared because this old sounding record came on. A few scattered lads came out onto the floor, and they were really going for it, doing the acrobatics and the spins and they just looked really cool. And then I saw the girls at it, and I said to my older cousin, what is this? And she said, it’s northern soul. That was it.”

Northern Soul was released on October 17 – go and watch it now!
