Is the pen really mightier than the sword…?

Is the pen really mightier than the sword…?

Email or call? Is it really that hard to decide? Well actually yes... Obviously certain situations are best resolved face to face or finalised on paper but most communication in the workplace; recruitment agency and the world of design and digital is no exception is covered through phone calls or email.

I know in my role I get around 100 messages a day through email and it’s impossible to action each one. The easiest thing to do is to determine whether they are ‘very important’ to ‘attend later’ or ‘ignore’... Frustratingly most are the first two categories. Then the decision is to either respond on email or to call the sender.

Maybe I am wrong here but in my opinion the phone is certainly the best weapon I have in my arsenal. It allows for me to be able to actually communicate articulately to the other person on the end of the phone in a manner that is very hard to do on email. Tone of voice is always lost on email and unless it is a brief acknowledgment or to clarify points discussed on the phone then steer clear. Sending an email and then staring blanking at your laptop screen waiting for a response (that in many cases don’t answer your original email) is frustrating, irritating and ultimately results in wasted time.

Before email in the 80’s and earlier if we wanted to speak to someone, clarify an issue or avoid a problem we would pick up the phone. Why in today’s world of the internet and numerous social networking sites have we lost the ability to communicate clearly and effectively on the phone and shy away behind emails?

I’d be open to hearing your viewpoint on this subject matter as I feel quite strongly the phone is still the way forward proving that the phone is indeed mightier than written word... Or is it?
